On Tuesday, France announced in a decree that domestic and direct flights will be abolished, for which there is an alternative by train, which takes less than 2 hours and 30 minutes and runs several times a day. In addition, a stay of at least eight hours must be possible.
According to Transport Minister Clément Beaune, France is the first country in the world to introduce such a system. He speaks of a “strong symbol for decarbonising transportation”.

In fact, the decree only concerns three lines that were already abolished in 2021, writes the “Figaro”.
In concrete terms, this concerns the three connections between Paris-Orly and Bordeaux, Nantes and Lyon.
The connections between Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Bordeaux or Nantes are exempt from the measure because the train journey time is longer than 2.30 hours.
The measures would be reviewed in three years, says the decree. A previously prohibited connection can be operated again if the quality of train traffic changes or if the conditions for proper operation are no longer met.
