According to media reports, the officers were thrown with stones and fireworks. Videos circulating online show police officers in riot gear trying to control a crowd. According to police, several cars were set on fire. The riots lasted into the early hours and several people were arrested.
Police would not say what exactly happened in the accident. According to police commissioner Michael, two young people traveling on a two-wheeler were killed. “This seems to have triggered the riots for reasons that are not clear (…),” said Michael. According to him, rumors circulated that the fatal accident occurred after a police chase. However, that was not the case.
The police also stressed that they did not arrive at the scene until after the accident. “I think it shows how quickly rumors can spread through social media these days – and events can get out of hand,” continued Michael. He described the affected neighborhood as neglected. (aeg/sda/dpa)
