A new test facility for drones is being built in Dübendorf ZH. The Federal Materials Test and Research Institute Empa wants to investigate the interaction of drones, infrastructure and nature in a kind of drone aviary.
The aim, for example, is to develop drones that can detect and repair cracks in house walls or wind turbines, Empa announced on Tuesday. The so-called “Dronehub” is a kind of cage with a height of up to eleven meters and a floor space of 90 square meters. It consists of a tube construction and a grille.
New test arena for drones and autonomous vehicles
According to Empa, this will make the Zurich region a hotspot for drone research. In addition to the new aviary on the Empa campus, a new test arena for drones and autonomous vehicles is currently being built at Dübendorf Airport.
A certification body for commercially used drones will be established there under the leadership of the University of Zurich, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). (SDA/chs)
