Violent protests broke out in Cardiff, Wales, on Tuesday night.

After a fatal road accident in the Welsh capital, Cardiff, there was serious rioting and attacks on police on Tuesday night. A dozen officers were injured. Police and Crime Commissioner for the South of Britain, Alun Michael, told BBC 4 radio.

According to media reports, the officers were thrown with stones and fireworks. Videos circulating online show police officers in riot gear trying to control a crowd. According to police, several cars were set on fire. The riots lasted into the early hours and several people were arrested.

The population blames the police for the accident

Police would not say what exactly happened in the accident. According to police commissioner Michael, two young people traveling on a two-wheeler were killed. “This seems to have triggered the riots for reasons that are not clear (…),” said Michael. According to him, rumors circulated that the fatal accident occurred after a police chase. However, that was not the case.

The police also stressed that they did not arrive at the scene until after the accident. “I think it shows the speed at which rumors can spread through social media activity these days – and that events can get out of hand,” Michael continued. He described the affected neighborhood as neglected. (SDA/chs)
