Last night a fire broke out in a school.

At least 20 people have been killed in a fire at a school dormitory in Guyana, South America.

“We have lost many wonderful souls in this fire,” the country’s government said on Monday. Several people were injured. Authorities initially gave no information about the ages of the victims. The fire occurred at Mahdia Secondary School in the Potaro-Siparuni region in the center of the country.

Seven children are being taken to the capital Georgetown for medical care. Five planes are already on their way to Mahdia to, among other things, bring medical supplies to the affected region.

Fire was difficult to tame because of the weather

In its statement, the government asked for prayers for the children, their families and the community. Bad weather conditions had made it difficult to bring the fire under control, an earlier statement said.

According to local media, the fire broke out on Monday night for reasons that are still unclear. With 800,000 inhabitants, the state is one of the poorest countries in South America. (SDA)
