Northern Irish actor Ray Stevenson (“Rome”, “The Boat”) has died. His office confirmed to the German news agency on Monday that he died on the Italian island of Ischia on Sunday. She gave no further information. Stevenson was 58 years old. The trade magazine “Deadline” recently reported that Stevenson will play the lead role in the film “Cassino in Ischia”.

Stevenson made his breakthrough as an actor starring as a Roman legionnaire in the TV series “Rome” (2005-2007), later starring in several “Thor” film adaptations as Volstagg, one of the best friends of the Marvel hero of the same name. As musketeer Porthos in “The Three Musketeers” (2011) alongside Matthew Macfadyen and Logan Lerman, he thwarted the scheming Christoph Waltz, in “Vikings” (2020) he played the mysterious navigator Othere.

Last year, Stevenson starred as naval officer Jack Swinburne in the third season of the German series Das Boot. According to the trade magazine “Deadline”, he was recently cast as the lead in the historical drama “1242: Gateway to the West”. In the trailer of the unreleased “Star Wars” spin-off “Ahsoka” he can also be seen as the human power user Baylan Skoll. (sda/dpa)
