Several Russian Telegram channels are reporting that a luxury Aurus car that may belong to Russian patriarch Kirill I, 76, was involved in an accident in Moscow on Monday. The incident happened around 6:30 am.

A Volvo went off the road and collided with the Aurus. One person was injured but did not require hospitalization.

It is not known whether Patriarch Kirill himself was in the car. Photos and videos of the scene of the accident are circulating on the internet.

According to the Russian news agency Interfax, a source in the Russian Orthodox Church said that the information about the accident involving Patriarch Kirill’s car was not true.

Very rich, with connections to Switzerland

Kirill is a former KGB agent and has been the head of the Russian Orthodox Church since February 1, 2009. Previously he was archbishop of the dioceses of Smolensk and Kaliningrad. His private wealth is estimated at about $4 billion.

In the summer of 2022, some states imposed sanctions on Kirill for supporting Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

The prince of the church also has a connection with Switzerland: he preached in Geneva, among other places. Kirill is said to have visited Switzerland 43 times, the Sunday newspaper reported in February. The head of the church is considered a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin (70). His real name is Vladimir Gunyaev. (no)
