This was announced by the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, on Monday. “The nuclear safety situation at the power plant is extremely threatened,” Grossi wrote on Twitter.

The Ukrainian nuclear company Enerhoatom has confirmed the incident. On Monday morning, the high-voltage line that supplies the power station with power was damaged by shelling. The cooling would be provided by the existing diesel generators.

Fuel is available for this for ten days. All in all, it is the seventh blackout since the beginning of the Russian occupation in March 2022.

The IAEA in Vienna fears that a malfunction in the cooling systems could lead to overheating of the fuel rods and nuclear waste, leading to a nuclear accident.

There has been speculation for some time about a Ukrainian counter-offensive in southern Ukraine, which also aims at the return of the nuclear power plant. In October last year, a Ukrainian landing operation at the power plant failed.

Grossi again called for an agreement between Kiev and Moscow not to attack Europe’s largest nuclear power plant and not to use it as a military base. “It can’t go on like this,” he wrote.
