A major change has taken place in Iran’s powerful Security Council. After ten years in office, Brigadier General Ali Shaccani is succeeded by a new face, state radio reported Monday.

Ali Akbar Ahmadian has now been proposed as the new secretary, who will take on the role of a direct representative of the country’s supreme religious leader and most powerful man. The former commander of the influential Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is subject to international sanctions.

The powerful body deals with issues related to national security, national defense and the protection of the Islamic revolution. In addition to the president as chairman, the council, which has about ten members, has several ministers and generals.

The secretary acts as an envoy of the religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Council makes decisions through parliament that are final after approval by the religious leader. Iran’s nuclear program has historically been a subject of the Council.
