Vehicles from Hungary, Romania and Serbia are now being checked more intensively, the Ministry of the Interior in Vienna reported on Sunday. In addition, police cooperation with Hungary is under scrutiny.
The Hungarian government of Prime Minister Viktor Urban had previously announced the release of thousands of foreign prisoners held for smuggling. The only condition is that they leave Hungary within 72 hours. The Interior Ministry in Vienna pointed out that these were criminals who had endangered human lives.
Irregular migration via the Balkan route to Austria mainly goes through Hungary. In the past month, Austria registered a total of about 3,500 new asylum applications – a third less than a year ago. The Ministry of the Interior attributes this to better monitoring of smuggling routes and closer cooperation with countries of origin and transit. (sda/dpa)
