Smashed Kurt Cobain guitar sold at auction Oman wants to supply Switzerland with hydrogen

A broken guitar belonging to former Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain (1967 – 1994) has been auctioned in New York for almost 600,000 dollars (about 540,000 francs).

The estimated value was $80,000, according to auction house Julien’s on Saturday. Accordingly, in 1992, Cobain gave the black “Fender Stratocaster” to his friend and colleague Mark Lanegan of the band Screaming Trees. The electric guitar features doodles of Nirvana’s band members.

The auction was part of a three-day “Music Icons” auction that saw more than 1,200 pieces owned by music greats such as Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Madonna and Michael Jackson on Sunday evening (local time).

A green “Irish Falcon” guitar from traditional manufacturer Gretsch, which once belonged to Irish U2 musician Bono, fetched nearly $240,000. A black and gold jacket worn by Michael Jackson on his 1992 “Dangerous” world tour fetched $117,000. A bomber jacket worn by Queen singer Freddie Mercury onstage at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 1977 went under the hammer for a whopping $57,000. (sda/dpa)
