The little polar bear baby is now five months old. It doesn’t have a name yet.

He is alert, curious and nibbles at everything the zookeepers have to offer him: the baby polar bear in Tierpark Hagenbeck in Hamburg is the new star of the zoo. It is now about 22 weeks old, still unnamed – but now the gender is known.

At the first vaccination, the zoo vet was able to determine that it was a female. To protect the polar bear cub against leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that affects the ureters, bladder and kidneys, the animal must be vaccinated twice. Both took it well.

“Everything must be gnawed away”

Zoo veterinarian and mammal curator Dr. Michael Flügger: “The little one is incredibly mobile, active and discovers everything the zookeepers have to offer her. For example, branches, tree trunks, dandelions, a toy ball with food or water from a garden hose, everything must be examined and gnawed, just like mom.”

Mother Victoria, who was born at the zoo more than 20 years ago, is also doing well. She appears very relaxed and happy and takes extremely good care of her young animal, the zoo tells Focus.

Visitors must vote on names

The little ones and the visitors should not yet marvel at each other. But that should happen in the near future. And soon there will also be a name – with the help of the public.

Tierpark spokeswoman Michaela Wilke about “Bild”: “We want to involve visitors and animal caretakers and promptly – as with other offspring – have the name voted on.” (new)
