Ecuadorian trade unions warn Guillermo Lasso

He United Front of Workers (FUT)the most important trade union center in Ecuador, warned this Thursday that it should react if The government of the conservative Guillermo Lassowhich dissolved Parliament on Wednesday, issued anti-labor or privatization laws for state-owned companies.

José Villavicencio, President of FUThe described Lasso’s government as “dictatorial” because it declared the so-called “death by the cross”, a legal norm to dissolve the National Assembly (Parliament), predict general elections and govern until then by executive decree.

Villavicencio expressed the union’s fear of the possibility that Lasso can issue decrees that accelerate the processes of work flexibility and precariousness, as well as the reduction of rights in terms of social security.

Lasso could influence legal decrees ” individual and collective rights of workers“, and even criminalize social protests that can generate such kind of measures, the union leader pointed out.

So, Villavicencio called all the social organizations in the country to a big convention to be held in Quito next June 3, to assess the situation and define possible actions.

on your side Mesías Tatamuez, another FUT leaderhe assured that the unions are not afraid of the “death by the cross” that the ruler declared on Wednesday and because of which he dissolved the Assembly.

The trade unions, he said, have been emphasizing the slogan “for everyone to leave” for several months, including Lasso and legislators, whom he considered co-responsible for the complex situation in the country.

Marcela Arellano, another of the presenters, said that FUTAt this point, it will strengthen the defense of “decent work” and fight any attempt to make work unsafe.

“We will not allow reform flexibility of work that the only thing he’s trying to do is make working conditions more precarious,” Arellano reiterated, referring to the comments of some authorities about the possibility of issuing decrees on new forms of employment and labor employment.

Unions will also mobilize if the government passes decrees on the privatization of companies in Croatia statebelieving that the country needs, in fact, “quality public services”, he said.

In short, said the union leader FUT it will ensure the “defense of dignified work”, it will fight “against job insecurity”, it will defend social security and prevent privatizations.

If he Government intends to implement these reforms through decree laws, “we will stand up”, he emphasized Arellano.
