The festival has existed for 30 years – where it will take place is not known in advance.

About 10,000 partying music fans have gathered for an illegal techno festival in the small town of Villegongis in central France. The location of the 30th edition of the “Teknival” was not known in advance. Despite a ban on spontaneous music festivals during the long Ascension weekend, the authorities now guarantee the order and safety of the participants, the Indre department reported on Thursday. Police, rescue services and civil protection were deployed for this. The “Teknival” is expected to last all weekend.

The organizers had counted on a peak of 30,000 participants, the Liberation newspaper reported. On Thursday night, a large number of vehicles gathered in a neighboring town to begin organizing the festival, which had not been approved or announced to authorities, the department said. The newspaper reported that the equipment was delivered by vans and trucks with trailers. The festival will therefore take place on a vacant private property, the owner was not informed in advance.

You were presented with a fait accompli, said Mayor Jean-Marc Sevault. Now it is important to ensure that the festival is as orderly as possible without incident. The village of Villegongis between Bourges and Poitiers has just over 100 inhabitants. Eleven clubs from different regions of France and 130 volunteers say they ensure the safety and health of the participants. Known throughout Europe, the «Teknival» was founded thirty years ago.
