A mentally disturbed man sparked a police operation at the Vatican.

A driver caused a great commotion in the Vatican around 8 p.m. on Thursday evening: the man in his forties tore through a gate past the Swiss guards into a palace courtyard in a car.

The car reached the eastern Sant’Anna entrance gate of the Vatican and broke at high speed through the two control gates of the Pontifical Swiss Guard and the Gendarmerie Corps of the Vatican State, the Holy See said. First, the car approached and was turned away by the Swiss Guards. After a maneuver it turned back and ran into the Vatican.

Vatican gendarmes fired at the tires of the car at the gate, but the driver was able to continue. When the car reached the Cortile di San Damaso, the central courtyard of the Apostolic Palace, the driver got out and was immediately arrested. Apparently he was in a mental emergency.

The Holy See said the driver was about 40 years old and in a “severe state of psychophysical change”. It is unclear where Pope Francis was at the time of the incident. (neo/SDA)
