Palma M.* (69†) everyone just called Marinella. She was swept away by the current and her husband was unable to help her.

Sauro M.* (60†) and Palma M.* (69†), all just named Marinella, were well known in the region. The couple grew herbs and flowers in a house and an adjoining greenhouse in Ronta di Cesena (I).

When the Savio bursts its banks and wreaks havoc, Sauro and Marinella sit in their greenhouse, unaware of the magnitude of the danger. Oria Strobino is Marinella’s sister-in-law and lives just a few hundred meters away. She tells local media what happened.

“My Husband Heard the Screaming”

“As the water rose higher and higher, my husband was about to watch the dogs outside when he heard screams.” It is Sauro, lying on a meadow in front of the house, his body half in the water. Oria’s husband rushes to Sauro and tries to help him and get him to safety. When he reaches him, he’s barely breathing. Sauro M. tells him that Marinella slipped, that he tried to save her, but he couldn’t.

Her daughter (33) called Sauro and Marinella, warned them about the River Savio, told them to get to safety. But around 10 p.m. they were still busy in the greenhouse, probably trying to save herbs from the floods. When they came out, the water is there, the current is getting stronger.

Body found 12 miles away

Meanwhile, the daughter alerted the fire brigade when her sister-in-law Oria Strobino’s husband was with Sauro: “My husband tried to get him to safety, but he couldn’t.” When the fire brigade arrives, Sauro M. has died. “The physical exertion and the shock probably put too much strain on his heart.”

The body of Marinella M. was found on the beach of Zadina on Thursday morning. The water masses had carried them 12 miles away. According to local media, a medical examination showed that she did not drown, but died when she sank due to the strong current.

The area on the Adriatic coast has been ravaged by heavy storms since Tuesday. At least eight people were killed. There are also reports of missing persons. The provinces of Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena, Rimini and Bologna are the hardest hit – and the cities of Faenza, Cesena and Forlì in particular. The exceptionally heavy rainfall caused 21 of the region’s 23 rivers to burst their banks. 37 municipalities were affected by the floods. Authorities also recorded 250 landslides, 120 of which had serious consequences. (new)
