Shrapnel, broken bones and flesh wounds – the traces of the war in Ukraine are bloody. Wounded Russian soldiers are actually entitled to care and compensation.
So that the Russian authorities do not have to pay compensation, contract soldiers are simply given false diagnoses. And so even seriously injured soldiers end up directly at the front again. Several members of the Russian telegram channel “Mojem Objasnit” report this.
A soldier with a gunshot wound returned to battle after ten days in hospital. His wife applied for the insurance payment, but the authorities refused. “The governor says he doesn’t pay money for bumps,” it reads. Instead of the gunshot wound, the report contained an incorrect diagnosis. “They do that with all moderate injuries,” says the woman.
Another contract soldier reports that he fought for a month with varicose veins and severe bruises – not only against Ukraine, but also for his life. “He came to the hospital when he couldn’t walk because of the varicose veins. The boys carried him out of the battle zone,” says the soldier’s mother. Because it was serious, he even had to be transferred from the hospital to a hospital in Samara.
“You’re Not That Hurt”
But a declaration – and therefore a claim to insurance benefits – does not exist to this day. The soldier fights at the front again. «Who should we contact without a doctor’s report? It makes no sense,” the family said.
Another woman says her husband suffered multiple concussions during the battle. She turned to the responsible authorities with the medical certificate. “They claimed my husband was misdiagnosed and actually had an acute respiratory infection,” she explains. Other doctors could have confirmed it was a concussion. There was a medal for his valiant struggle – the wounded received no compensation.
Already in June, the Russian news portal “161RU” reported about soldiers who were transferred from the Donbas to other hospitals with severe concussions. There, one of the men was told, “You didn’t come here that hurt.”
Such cases are piling up. As the Telegram channel “Agentsvo” reported in January, wounded Russians are being sent back to the front before the doctors give their approval. Many soldiers pay with their lives.
No compensation for next of kin
Aid to surviving relatives is also often not paid. At first, bodies were hidden from relatives. Without a corpse there is no entitlement to benefits. The victims are now being sent home for burial, but insurance still won’t pay. For months they are stuck in the wheels of bureaucracy.
The organization “Sogaz” provides payments to the survivors of the “heroes” who died in the war. But the military authorities consistently fill in the applications incorrectly. “Sogaz kept sending the documents back to the unit, which kept sending them back incorrectly. And that has been the case for months,’ says the relative of a mobilized soldier who died in the war. As the military and insurance companies blame each other for underperformance, the number of injuries and deaths continues to mount.
