The next European elections will take place from 6 to 9 June 2024. The ambassadors of the EU countries agreed on this in Brussels on Wednesday, the responsible Swedish Council presidency announced. The decision has yet to be formally confirmed. This is scheduled for next Monday.

The period of several days applies to all EU Member States. According to the Federal Returning Officer, this should ensure that the various electoral traditions can be maintained. In most Member States, elections are held on a Sunday or public holiday.

Elections to the European Parliament take place every five years. The previous European elections were in May 2019. At the time, both far-right and far-right parties gained ground, but the Greens and Liberals also made significant gains. Christian Democrats and Social Democrats reached historic lows. The European Parliament has seats in Strasbourg and Brussels.
