Biden is “optimistic” in US debt dispute: police in Italy find 2.7 tons of cocaine among bananas

After a high-level meeting to settle the US debt dispute, President Joe Biden expressed confidence.

He announced on Tuesday that “there is still a lot of work to be done on some difficult issues, but he is optimistic there is a path to a responsible, cross-party budget agreement”. However, both Republicans and Democrats should be willing to compromise.

Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy and Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had previously spoken of positive signs during the meeting with Biden at the White House. The US president stressed that he would be on the phone with congressional leaders during his trip to the G7 summit in Japan and would meet with them when he returned to Washington. Biden had canceled his planned visits to Australia and Papua New Guinea because of the dispute and is expected back in Washington on Sunday.

The background to this is that the US government is in danger of bankruptcy within days unless the Biden administration agrees with the Republicans in the US Congress on raising the debt ceiling. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that this could happen as early as June 1. (sda/dpa)
