German wildlife filmmaker Kieling reports on bear attacks when the French and the German-speaking Swiss gossip about each other

German wildlife filmmaker Andreas Kieling was attacked and injured by a bear while filming in the Romanian High Carpathians. Back in Germany, he addressed his followers in a video message on Facebook and summarized what happened:

Why the attack happened, the 63-year-old can only guess. However, he does not blame the bear for this – he was the intruder. Kieling is known for always getting very close to the wild animals in his animal documentaries. Also on bears. This was the fifth major accident in his 32 years as a wildlife filmmaker. He’s also run into bears before: it wasn’t the first attack Kieling experienced and survived, it was the third and, by his accounts, the worst.

Actually not on a bear hunt

The 63-year-old actually didn’t want to film bears when the accident happened. During filming he was on the trail of dippers and three-toed woodpeckers.

Kieling is unlikely to sustain any permanent damage. He was treated by a surgeon on his badly injured left hand and scalp and “everything will be fine,” as he says in the video. (lzo)
