President of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, Vsevolod Knyazev was arrested by state authorities due to his alleged involvement in a bribery case, the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Corruption reported today at a press conference held in Kyiv.

“The Chief Justice has been arrested and steps are being taken in the investigation other persons because of their involvement in the crime», prosecutor Oleksandr Omelchenko said during the press conference, quoted by local media.

Several Ukrainian publications reported on Monday, citing official sources, the arrest of Knyazev for accepting bribes worth 2.7 million dollars (about 2.4 million euros). According to the Anti-Corruption Bureau, this is the largest case of judicial corruption ever known in Ukraine. Local media point to Ukrainian oligarch Kostyantyn Zhevago fled to France as one of the beneficiaries for this alleged purchase of judges. The press service of Zhevag – whose extradition to Ukraine was refused by France in March – has denied any involvement in the case.
