The Italian financial police have found packages among crates of bananas containing more than 2.7 tons of cocaine and an estimated market value of around 800 million euros.

The large amount of the drug was seized in the port of the town of Gioia Tauro in the southern region of Calabria, the financial police reported on Tuesday. It is said to be “pure cocaine”. The 2,734 kilos of the drug was hidden in two 12 meter long refrigerated containers between a delivery of about 78 tons of bananas.

According to information, they came from Ecuador, were on their way to Armenia and would be shipped via the Georgian city of Batumi. The find is the result of the ongoing investigation of the trade routes from South America to the Black Sea, which passed through the port of Calabria. The financial police spoke of a “record find”. There were thousands of containers in the port.

According to their own statements, Italian financial police and customs officials were able to locate and seize large shipments of cocaine totaling some 600 kilograms in the days leading up to Tuesday’s action. They were also hidden in different containers between exotic fruit from Ecuador. In the fight against international drug trafficking, some 37 tons of cocaine have been seized in that port since January 2021, it was said. (aeg/sda/dpa)
