A teacher in the US state of Florida showed her students a Disney movie – now she is facing the consequences. Because the teacher is under investigation for allegedly violating the law on parental rights in education – otherwise known as the “Don’t say gay” law. This is reported, among others, by the American newspaper ‘Tallahassee Democrat’.

Jenna Barbee showed the fifth graders the 2022 movie Strange World, the first Disney movie to feature an openly gay protagonist. She was subsequently reported to the Ministry of Education by the mother of a student for alleged indoctrination.

Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis last year pushed for schools to stop teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity. This initially applied to primary school students, but has now been extended to all age groups.

Barbee said the film will not contain any sexually inappropriate content, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. “The word ‘indoctrination’ is being used a lot right now, but it seems that those who use it are using it as a defense tactic for their own fear-based beliefs without understanding the true meaning of the word,” she said.
