“Loud Quitting”: threatens to be fired for more pay “Loud Quitting”: threatens to be fired for more pay

It’s the latest trend online: “Loud Quitting”. Loud threats for more pay. The success and drawbacks behind the trend.

About a year ago, the term “Quiet Quitting” made headlines. This is a variant of service according to the rules: employees only perform the required minimum. No overtime. No additional service. Privacy comes first.

But now “Quite Quitting” is being drowned out by “Loud Quitting” on social media.

“Loud Quitting” is about forcing the employer to the negotiating table by loudly announcing that you want to leave the company. More pay. More vacation. A promotion. The ulterior motive: Given the shortage of skilled workers, the company cannot afford to lose employees.

@metrouk Sometimes you have to stand your ground, voice your concerns and make your requests known at work. But beware, stopping loudly has to be done very carefully and strategically. And we’re here to help. #work #quietquitting #loudquitting ♬ original sound – MetroUK

The strong economic upswing after the lifting of the corona measures has driven the number of vacancies at breakneck speed to new record highs. One speaks of a labor market. In other words, there are currently more vacancies than qualified personnel. A formidable starting position for dissatisfied employees or job seekers.

On social media such as TikTok and YouTube, users discuss how to use this tactic most successfully. They give each other tips and talk about their success.

Origin in America

Who initiated this trend? The Americans, of course.

The trend was started by employees of American technology companies. “Loud Quitting” is the answer to the obsession with saving big companies like Amazon, Facebook, Google or Twitter. They wanted to lay off staff en masse for economic reasons.

Highly trained programmers and engineers saw their chance to make it clear to their employers that without their specialist knowledge nothing would work in the company.

An example: Twitter. Elon Musk wanted to save several top people and fired him. With regret in his heart he had to offer these people a job again. After all, without them the store would not run.

The dark side

However, the negotiation tactics are controversial. Because if you overestimate your negotiating position, you can quickly end up with facts.

Employers can also interpret the dissolute behavior as an attack on the duty of loyalty. And once trust is gone, even the biggest threat is of no use: “If you make noise about every little thing, this tool will eventually become blunt and not have much effect,” says labor market expert Mattias Mölleney to the ” Tagesanzeiger”.

Mölleney advises dissatisfied employees to enter into a dialogue with their employer. If wages are the issue, an employee must be able to argue convincingly for an increase: “In bilateral wage negotiations, it is important that I can explain and justify very clearly what added value I bring to the company and why I earned a higher salary.” wages,” said Molleney.

“Women forgive ‘Loud Quitting’ less quickly than men”

In Switzerland, the trend has not yet really caught on. Certainly not in women. “Women are less forgiven for ‘stopping loud’ than men, for whom it is interpreted more as an initiative,” says equality expert and executive coach Zita Küng to “annabelle”.

According to Küng, this is because asking for more money is still seen as outrageous and not a typically feminine trait. “When women stand up for their right to a fair wage, they encounter resistance. Gender stereotypes should reveal themselves,’ says Küng.
