According to activists, many people have taken to the streets in Iran to protest against the imminent execution of several men. Protesters gathered in front of a prison in the Isfahan metropolis on Monday evening, photos posted on social media showed. The recordings could not initially be independently verified.
For days, human rights activists have been warning about the execution of several controversial death sentences. Those threatened include three protesters accused by the judiciary of killing security forces during the November nationwide protests. More than 200 people will have been executed in Iran by 2023, according to the UN.
The wave of protests in the autumn was triggered by the death of the young Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini. She died in police custody in mid-September after being arrested by the vice squad for disobeying Islamic dress codes. Her death sparked the worst protests in decades. (sda/dpa)
