Maciej D.* (75) has been a veterinarian for 48 years, but nothing like this has ever happened to him. In early May 2022, a woman from Zagnańsk Municipality called him to put her sick dog to sleep.
Maciej D. drives off, enters the premises and finds the German Shepherd. He gives the animal – five-year-old Stefan – a lethal injection. He talks to the owner and only now it becomes clear: he made a mistake in the address. He put down a healthy animal.
Vet did not examine the dog beforehand
The owner of the healthy animal thought the vet was coming to do vaccinations.
Maciej D. was now before the court for this. He didn’t examine the animal – and he didn’t reassure himself before giving the shot.
He does not deny his guilt in court in Kielce. “I grieve for what happened. I am aware that I have done something wrong. I hurt myself, my family, the environment. I’m really sorry,” he told the dog’s owner.
Guilty – for using an unauthorized substance
The owner of the killed dog replied, according to Polish media: “We accept the apology, but the dog’s life will not give us back.”
The vet was found guilty – but mainly because he broke the law by using an illegal compound. He was sentenced to six months’ probation in prison. He was also given a one-year professional ban.
He also has to pay a fine of about 1,100 francs and about 520 francs to an animal shelter for stray animals. (new)
