US President Biden warns against right-wing extremism at graduation ceremony

US President Joe Biden repeated his warning of the danger of right-wing extremism in a speech to university graduates. “White supremacy” – the ideology of white supremacy – is the most dangerous terrorist threat to the United States, Biden said Saturday at a graduation ceremony for graduates of Howard University, a traditionally black university in Washington, D.C. Biden had made similar statements in the past – for example, in his speech upon taking office in January 2021.

To kick off the ceremony, Biden received an honorary doctorate from the university. Then he said, “We know that American history has not always been a fairytale.” Racism has torn the country apart. “It’s a fight. It’s never really over. But on the best of days, enough of us have the courage in our hearts to stand up for the best in ourselves and choose love over hate. Agree over disagreement.” According to the press, some of the graduates in attendance demonstrated with placards. One placard read: “Biden and (US Vice President Kamala) Harris are not interested in black people.” (sda/dpa)
