Two Palestinians killed in military operation in West Bank

According to Palestinian sources, two men were shot dead during an Israeli military operation near Nablus in the West Bank. A 19-year-old and a 32-year-old were shot in the head, the health ministry in Ramallah said on Saturday. Three other people were injured, including a woman in her 50s. She was therefore hit by several bullets. The Israeli army initially declined to comment when asked.

According to Palestinian reports, there have been clashes with the Israeli army. The army surrounded a house where several wanted people were said to be. According to reports, the dead and injured are not the suspects.

Nablus is considered a stronghold of militant Palestinians. Deadly clashes with the Israeli army regularly take place in the region. The security situation in Israel and the West Bank has long been extremely tense. At least 110 Palestinians have been shot there since the beginning of the year during Israeli military operations, confrontations or after their own attacks. During the same period, 17 Israelis, a Ukrainian and an Italian were killed in attacks.

During the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The Palestinians, on the other hand, are calling for the territories to become their own state – with East Jerusalem as the capital. (cst/sda/dpa)
