Convicted of sexual assault: Trump appeals

Former US President Donald Trump, sentenced to millions in damages for sexual assault and defamation, has appealed the verdict.

A grand jury in New York on Tuesday found it proven that Trump assaulted and sexually assaulted author E. Jean Carroll in a luxury New York department store in 1996.

She also ordered Trump to pay the 79-year-old a total of $5 million (about CHF 4.46 million) for defamation. Trump had already announced his intention to appeal after the decision. On Thursday, his lawyers filed a corresponding document with the court.

“He’s ready to move forward. He’s going to appeal it,” Trump attorney Joseph Tacopina said after the ruling.

Writer Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a New York department store in the mid-1990s. The jury rejected the rape charge. The real estate entrepreneur, who was not yet active as a politician at the time, had always rejected all accusations. The criminal charges are time-barred, but under civil law, 79-year-old Carroll was free to take legal action. (sda/dpa)
