Dogs are loyal and empathetic creatures – to their masters and mistresses as well as each other. Like humans, the fur noses can become good friends and take care of each other’s well-being.

This revealed a tragic story that took place in the German state of Saxony near Zwickau. A dog unfortunately lost his companion animal and had to be rescued by the Zwickau police in his grief.

Dog wanders on the A72 near Zwickau

The reason: A driver discovered a dog wandering in the highway lane. Fortunately, he was able to avoid a collision with his four-legged friend at the last minute.

After the driver’s report, the officers came to the specified location on the highway. There they found not one dog, but two.

The tan mongrel dogs had probably been out together before – but one must have been hit by a car and lying dead in the street when police arrived. His faithful companion probably felt that the accident had thrown him into the role of protector and groped around his dead friend in mourning.

The rescue, however, was anything but easy: officials initially had difficulty approaching the duo – the grieving mongrel vehemently defended his companion who had suffered an accident. Therefore, for safety reasons, the emergency services first had to close the entire highway in both directions with the help of other officials.

When the police finally built up enough confidence, the animal finally calmed down and was made safe. Because the owner could not be identified at first, it was initially placed with an animal shelter.

Holder reports to the police

The highway was reopened around 1:30 a.m. and the police action was declared over.

The tragic story finally ended with a happy ending – at least given the circumstances: the master safely picked up his four-legged friend from the animal shelter.
