In all, there were about 270 dead, with 205 crossing the border into Israel, the army said early evening.

A total of 63 missiles were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. The rest landed in an open area and there were also three impacts in urban areas. Sirens also blared in central Israel in the afternoon.

According to the army, the Israeli air force had previously attacked more than 100 targets in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian security circles said several military installations and facilities belonging to the militant Palestinian organization Islamic Jihad had been hit. At least five Palestinians have been killed, according to hospital reports.

The Israeli Air Force killed three senior members of the Islamic Jihad on Tuesday night. Israeli airstrikes in the coastal strip killed a total of 13 people, including several women and children. Two members of a militant Palestinian group were also killed in an Israeli attack on a car in southern Gaza on Tuesday. According to the army, they would have carried guided anti-tank missiles.

Several groups in the Gaza Strip announced retaliatory measures. The Israeli army justified the military strike in recent weeks with several attacks from the Gaza Strip. Most recently, Palestinian militants fired dozens of rockets and mortar shells into Israeli territory following the death of a Palestinian prisoner last week.
