Climate activists disrupted Volkswagen’s annual general meeting in Berlin on Wednesday. A pie throw just missed the chairman of the supervisory board of Porsche, Wolfgang Porsche (80), and an activist unmasked himself, interrupting the speech of VW boss Oliver Blume (54), an AFP reporter reports.
An alliance of various groups, including the Last Generation and Scientist Rebellion, claimed this and a number of other actions for themselves.
Naked activist taken
The activists had initially tried to block access to the conference center in the morning. They held a rally in front of the building and denounced the high greenhouse gas emissions from Volkswagen cars. “The science is clear,” the posters read. Volkswagen plans to sell far too many combustion engine cars.
At the meeting, according to the activists, there was a “pie attack” on Porsche’s chairman of the supervisory board, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Wednesday. The whipped cream cake smacked onto the podium in front of the grandson of company founder Ferdinand Porsche. An activist stormed in front of the stage during VW boss Blume’s speech and took off her top before being led away by guards.
«Creatively guided»
The shareholders’ meeting was ‘creatively supervised’ by activists, the alliance said. The aim is to set an example “against the exploitation and destruction that the group continues to promote in the name of its shareholders’ dividends”. The protest is aimed, among other things, at VW’s interference in China. The activists accuse the company of contributing to the oppression of the Muslim Uyghur minority there.
“A constructive exchange is important,” Volkswagen later explained. “And a members’ meeting offers a good opportunity for that. With the exception of a few, everyone adheres to the rules provided for this.” (AFP)
