Sentence in Thailand – 12,640 years in prison for fraud on Facebook

In this January 6, 2017 photo, an officer seals off a cell at a prison in Thailand. Thailand's prisons do not meet international standards, prisoners are routinely chained and crammed into overcrowded cells.

A couple in Thailand has been sentenced to a total of 12,640 years in prison for fraud. Because the two confessed, the sentence was reduced to 5,056 years each.

The newspaper “Bangkok Post” reports this on Wednesday with reference to the competent criminal court. The high sentences can be explained by the fact that the couple had to answer for numerous charges and the prison sentences in Thailand can be added up. Under the laws of the land, both face a maximum of 20 years in prison.

The defendants allegedly asked people on Facebook to invest in an alleged high-yield savings plan from March to October 2019. More than 2,500 people participated and transferred money – worth a total of 1.3 billion Thai baht (35 million euros), it said. The suspects allegedly pocketed the money. (aeg/sda/dpa)
