Four dead in an attack on a synagogue on the Tunisian island of Djerba

A security agent was injured in an attack on Tuesday night near a synagogue the tunisian island of Djerba passed away this Wednesday, which brings four the number of victimstwo pilgrims of Israeli and French nationality and another agent, apart from the attacker who was killed.

Ten people were injured, including four civilians and six agents, including the victim, in the attack carried out by a Tunisian agent at 7:30 p.m., the motives of which are unknown.

According to preliminary investigations the attacker was a National Guard agent that he was off duty and killed his partner before taking his uniform, service weapon and ammunition. Not long after, he went to a temple about twenty kilometers away, where the last day of the Jewish pilgrimage to Ghriba was celebrated, in which several thousand people attended and opened indiscriminate fire on security units which was protecting the building and brought it down, reported the MUP, which described the attack as “treasonous and cowardly”.

In an interview with the local radio station Mosaïque FM, former Minister of Tourism and member of the organizing committee of the pilgrimage, René Trabelsi, assured that most of the participants left the site before the attack, while those present were protected inside. The responsible person also revealed that he was the attacker he was wearing a bulletproof vestwhich complicated his “neutralization”.

In 2002, this synagogue, the oldest in the Maghreb region, suffered a jihadist attack claimed by the Al Qaeda group, in which 21 worshipers were killed.
