Livia Leu, State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), will be ambassador in Berlin. She will complete the ongoing exploratory talks with the EU and then start her new job.
The Federal Council announced this on Wednesday – confirming the reports of the Tamedia newspapers and other media from the previous day. Leu will resign from her post as secretary of state in the fall, it says. After that, she will serve as Swiss ambassador to Germany. She replaces Paul Seger in Berlin, who is retiring.
The 62-year-old top diplomat has been in charge of the talks with the EU since the autumn of 2020. During her tenure, negotiations for a framework agreement with the EU in 2021 were broken off. Since then, Leu and her team have been investigating how to proceed with EU representatives. At the end of March 2023, the Federal Council announced that the main parameters of a negotiating mandate should be drawn up by the end of June.
