Will Trump be convicted in the rape trial?

Author Jean Carroll leaves courthouse in Manhattan.

After pleading in the civil trial for rape against former US President Donald Trump (76), the twelve jurors are now advising on a verdict.

At the closing speeches, the lawyer of author Jean Carroll (79) repeated the accusation that Trump raped her in a luxury department store in New York in the mid-1990s: “He knows what he did”.

Trump’s lawyer again rejected this. The allegations are “unimaginable” and “incredible”. Trump was already prominent as a real estate entrepreneur at the time, so such an act would not have gone unnoticed.

Carroll is seeking damages from Trump for assault and libel. The 79-year-old had testified that she was unable to have romantic relationships after the incident. The criminal charges are time-barred, but under civil law, Carroll was free to sue. Trump, who is seeking to run for president again in 2024 and is running for the Republican nomination, has not personally traveled to the trial.

No hard evidence

An old audio recording from 2005 also played a role in the argument of Carroll’s lawyers, in which Trump made obscene and derogatory statements about women – and about the fact that as a star you could touch women’s genitals if you wanted to . This was not – as portrayed by Trump – talk among men, but a confession, the way he behaved. He did the same with Carroll.

Judge Lewis Kaplan will send the judges to deliberations on Tuesday. Then they must decide unanimously to reach a verdict. (SDA)
