For the Swiss (26) Gilles M.* from the canton of Geneva and the Frenchman Lucas D.* (23) the journey to the Peruvian ruined city of Machu Picchu ended with an arrest. The Swiss was photographed naked last Thursday by D. in front of the archaeological site. Different countries, different customs: this disrespectful behavior angered the Peruvians. “The wonder of the world is respected!” the Peruvian police (Policía Nacional del Perú) tweeted. In addition, the officials posted a photo with the arrested Swiss.
Maritza Rosa Candia, Cuzco’s cultural director, said on the radio that the guards “saw a naked tourist near the guard’s house, in the upper part of the Inca citadel.” In the presence of the guards, the two were asked to remove the photos.
Fire order from police ignored
However, the removal was not crowned with success: the frivolous snapshot ended up on the internet – and even made it to Peruvian television 24 Horas (see video).
In any case, the matter is not over yet. The Swiss and the French are accused of “public indecency, display and obscene publication”. The city of Cusco has strict rules that visitors must respect. There have been convictions in the past, latina-press.com writes. The Swiss should expect a fine. (jwg)
