A prominent monk in Thailand is said to have collected donations for a temple of at least have embezzled 300 million Thai baht (about eight million euros)..
The 39-year-old, who as meditation teacher has become famous was arrested along with two other suspectsreported the newspaper “Bangkok Post” on Monday citing the police. This is his younger sister and the former abbot of the Buddhist temple.
Initially, the authorities assumed that 180 million baht had been embezzledbut meanwhile stand behind the temple in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima found more cash and gold. These were buried on a mound. It should be donations from believers. The suspected monk has denied the allegations, he said.
More than 90 percent of Thais are Buddhists. Religion plays an important role in the Southeast Asian country. The monks in their orange robes are highly respected and revered everywhere.
