Specially trained soldiers will be deployed to “hot spots” along the border “to intercept, divert and return migrants trying to illegally enter Texas,” Republican Greg Abbott said at a news conference in Austin, the state capital, on Monday. Texas. The so-called Texas Tactical Border Force is a new unit of the Texas National Guard specifically designed to combat illegal immigration.

The background is that the so-called Title 42 regulation expires on 11 May. It was introduced under former US President Donald Trump and made it easier to quickly reject migrants in reference to the corona pandemic. The US government now expects the already tense situation at the southern border to worsen as more migrants arrive from Central and Latin America. Washington therefore announced comprehensive measures, such as sending additional soldiers to the border, outsourcing the initial registration of asylum seekers to Colombia and Guatemala, and returning to the application of Title 8, which provides for a five-year travel ban in the event of illegal immigration.

Yet conservative politicians accuse US President Joe Biden, a Democrat, of having too lax border control and winning over voters. Abbott warned of an increase in illegal border crossings and a “disaster” for the United States. The Biden administration itself had repeatedly warned migrants about illegal border crossings. “The border is not open, it was not open and it will not be open after May 11,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on Friday.
