Hostilities and racist attacks have spiked since President Kais Saied announced tougher measures against them in February, accusing them of bringing violence and crime to Tunisia.
A number of migrants therefore want to translate to Europe as quickly as possible. However, the boats they leave with are often not seaworthy. Accidents with many fatalities happen again and again.
Tunisia is now considered the main transit point for migrants on their way to Italy. Nearly 45,000 migrants have reached Italy by boat since the beginning of the year, according to Rome’s interior ministry – nearly 12,000 in the same period last year.
