The war in Ukraine claims many victims. Russia repeatedly attacks civilian institutions, schools and residential buildings. The number of child victims is increasing daily. At least 480 children have been killed and 964 injured since the beginning of the Russian offensive war, according to the Kiev prosecutor’s office. This is reported by The Kiev Independent.
However, the number of casualties is now likely to be much higher, as the current census of the prosecutor’s office does not include data from the Russian-occupied territories or from areas where fighting is currently taking place.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimates that at least 501 children have died since the start of the war in Ukraine. About 1000 children were injured. Many of them will have to live a limited life forever due to the consequences of the injuries.
Russia kidnaps children from Ukraine
In addition to the killed and injured Ukrainian children, many are still missing. The national Ukrainian database estimates that 19,393 children have already been forcibly transferred to Russia.
Russia also uses the kidnappings for propaganda purposes. In February, Ukrainian children shared the stage with Russian soldiers at the Luzhniki Stadium. During the bizarre show, the girls and boys hugged a soldier and thanked him for their “rescue”. After all, Ukraine has now succeeded in returning 364 children to their homeland.
‘Russia has violated the welfare of these children’
In its latest report at the beginning of May, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) even classifies these mass deportations as crimes against humanity. The Hague therefore issued an arrest warrant against child rights officer Marija Lwowa-Belowa (38).
“The Russian Federation has not only repeatedly violated the welfare of these children, but also denied their right to identity, their right to family and their right to be reunited with their families,” the OSCE report said. (ceded)
