The aquarium in the Berlin hotel broke on December 16, 2022.

After the massive aquarium at the Radisson Collection Hotel in Berlin burst, no new aquarium is allowed to be built in the lobby. “Even without knowing the causes of the Aquadom’s bursting, we rule out a new large aquarium for the site,” said Fabian Hellbusch, spokesman for the building’s owner, the German news agency.

The effort to rebuild such an object is disproportionately high. “We are currently investigating a number of alternative, economically viable use concepts.” A decision has to be made halfway through the year.

The 16-meter high Aquadom aquarium with 1,500 fish in the hotel at Alexanderplatz burst open in the early hours of December 16. As a result, a million liters of water flowed from the destroyed plexiglass cylinder, including the hotel and the street. Two people were slightly injured. At least six other shops in the building complex were damaged. The accident attracted international attention.

Hotel is closed this year

The hotel is still closed and will not reopen this year, Hellbusch said. One of the reasons for this is that the elevators were badly damaged and still not working.

The cause of the aquarium bursting is still unclear. A team of experts examined the more than 700 fragments over several months. The study should be completed by mid-July. The experts cannot promise that the cause of the sudden break will be clearly determined. (SDA/gf)
