A Himars missile can hit its target with an accuracy of one metre.

They are one of Ukraine’s most effective weapons for weakening the advancing Russian army with sensitive blows: the Himars missile launchers, which hit their target from a great distance.

The Ukrainian army uses the systems for precise attacks on Russian military munitions depots and supply routes in the occupied territories.

But Russia has apparently gotten better at using jammers to weaken the system in recent months, CNN reports, citing people familiar with the matter.

Russia attacks target system

The Russian Armed Forces use electronic jammers to disable the system’s GPS targeting mechanism. For example, Russia can electronically disrupt contact with the satellites. The otherwise effective missiles miss their target.

According to CNN sources, US officials must continue to reconfigure Himar’s software to thwart Russia’s disruptive actions. “It’s a constant game of cat and mouse,” a Pentagon official told the TV station.

Already 9000 missiles fired

Ukraine has received 20 Himars systems from the US so far, with 18 more to be delivered in the coming years as part of a $1 billion US arms package.

A Himars system allows up to six missiles to be fired simultaneously in rapid succession, hitting targets up to 50 miles away. The accuracy must be three meters. According to CNN, the Ukrainian army has already fired 9,000 missiles with the systems. (new)
