Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin (61) stands in a warehouse in the Ukrainian city of Soledar, which his mercenaries captured together with the Russian army in January. He proudly poses with weapons that his fighters are said to have captured from the Ukrainian army. “Now let’s start the show. That’s all we found in the Soledar camps,” he says happily.

The Prigozhin propaganda video from the Russian news site Inforeactor is really just a “show”. A resourceful Twitter user analyzed the video and found that some of the captured weapons are weapons from the last and penultimate century.

Embarrassing shooting video of Prigozhin

At the beginning of the video, Prigozhin holds a modern Kalashnikov with a targeting device on the camera. But when he opens the captured weapon crates, one sees Thompson submachine guns in a box. These were made around 1920. In another box are the Maxim machine guns. They were produced until 1885.

“It’s all lying around in boxes, absolutely usable,” enthuses the mercenary leader. “There are machine guns, PPS, PPP, Maxims. The rate of fire is very high, no worse than modern weapons. Next are Degtyarev field machine guns.” He was willing to exchange his small arms for artillery shells.

Apart from the old weapons, the rest of the war equipment is actually more modern, but rusted and in scrap condition. Embarrassingly, Prigozhin continues to boast in the video, claiming that a million soldiers could be equipped with the camp’s weapons. However, a look at the boxes in the background also shows non-experts: this claim cannot be true.

On January 11, Prigozhin stated that the Wagner fighters had taken the town of Soledar near Bakhmut. Two days later, the Russian Ministry of Defense also announced that the Russian army had taken control of the city.
