A student shot at classmates and school staff at a school in Belgrade on Wednesday, killing eight people. State television RTS reports this, citing the Serbian Ministry of the Interior. The dead included six schoolchildren, a teacher and a security guard.
Earlier, the Ministry of the Interior only officially announced that the police had arrested a suspected shooter. The shots were fired from his father’s gun, he said. Initially, nothing was known about the motives of the youngster.
The news portal “nova.rs”, citing unspecified sources, reported that the alleged perpetrator, a 14-year-old seventh grader, had broken into a classroom and shot at the students. RTS reported that at least three schoolchildren have been taken to hospital. This information was initially not officially confirmed.
Large numbers of police and rescue workers flocked to the school in the center of Belgrade. The police have cordoned off the area over a large area, the media report. Education Minister Branko Ruzic and Health Minister Danica Grujicic also went to the scene of the tragedy. (aeg/sda/dpa)
