“Police believe the remains are those of the missing 65-year-old man, but the formal identification process is pending,” Queensland Police said on Wednesday.
The man suddenly disappeared Saturday while fishing on the Kennedy River in Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park. The river is notorious for its large crocodile population. Despite a thorough search of the dangerous waters, there was no trace of the man for days.
On Tuesday night, park rangers from the Ministry of the Environment finally discovered two crocodiles, about 4 and nearly 3 meters long, near where the fisherman was last seen. Both were euthanized and autopsied. After the remains were found, the search for the man has been discontinued, according to the police. (sda/dpa)
