Following rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Air Force has attacked targets in the Palestinian territories. The operation began late in the evening, the army announced on Tuesday. Further details were not initially given. According to media reports, several explosions were heard in the coastal strip.
Earlier, militants in the Gaza Strip fired at least 30 rockets and six mortar shells at Israel after the death of a Palestinian prisoner, the military said. At least three people in Israel were injured by rocket splinters, one of them seriously, according to doctors.
Other people have reportedly been treated for anxiety, among other things. In the evening, as the news site “ynet” reported, Egypt tried to mediate between Israel and parties in the Gaza Strip to end the fighting.
A senior member of the militant Palestinian organization Islamic Jihad died this morning in Israeli custody after nearly three months of hunger strike. Khader Adnan, 44, from the West Bank town of Jenin, was found unconscious in his cell early this morning, prison officials said. As a result, several militant Palestinian organizations in the Gaza Strip announced retaliatory measures.
According to prison authorities, Adnan was imprisoned for alleged membership in a terrorist organization and support for terrorism and hate speech. A spokesman said the Islamist began the hunger strike on February 5 after his arrest for suspected terrorist offences. It was already the tenth prison sentence in Israel. (sda/dpa)
