“In the last month alone, they have lost more than 15,000 men,” Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Tuesday, according to the agency’s Telegram channel. In addition, during the same period, the Russian army managed to shoot down 8 enemy aircraft, 277 drones, 430 tanks and armored vehicles and 225 artillery pieces.

The statements cannot be independently verified. Shoigu made no statements about his own losses.

In the past, the Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly made exaggerated claims of enemy casualties. According to official figures, Russia shot down 413 enemy aircraft in early May.

According to the media, Ukraine had only 124 combat and training aircraft and 63 transport aircraft at the start of the war. Since then, the country has received only a few remnants of Soviet aircraft technology from the West.

Shoigu also stated that Russian troops were active all along the front. “In general, the defense industry meets the needs of the Army and Navy,” he said. The statement is likely a response to recent complaints from the head of the Wagner mercenaries, Yevgeny Prigozhin, about a lack of artillery ammunition supplies.

Prigozhin and Shoigu’s relationship is considered strained. As an oligarch close to the Kremlin, the mercenary chief allows himself sharp criticism of the Defense Ministry.
