In Vienna, the climate protests of the “Last Generation Austria” escalated on Tuesday. The police were on the spot en masse. A helicopter was even deployed. The activists paralyzed traffic in the city center. The protests should last at least three weeks, “Last Generation” spokesman Florian Wagner confirms to heute.at. The group demands 100 km/h on all roads in Austria. The maximum speed on the highways is currently 130 km/h. They also want a ban on fracking.

The “Last Generation” has planned daily roadblocks and 70 activists participate. The police were prepared on Tuesday morning and sent 150 officers. Early in the morning there was a traffic jam. Much to the chagrin of many motorists.

Dissatisfied drivers are not allowed to act on their own authority, because “under certain circumstances you can make yourself punishable under criminal or administrative law,” according to the Viennese police. However, some handlebars then burst out of their collars. A video posted on social media shows a driver who wants to drive over the climate stickers and is immediately stopped by the police. The police quickly broke up the protest. By nine o’clock the streets were clear again and some activists were detained.

660 police officers on duty

A week ago, the “Last Generation” demonstrated in Berlin and disrupted traffic there. The police spoke of 33 blockades. This resulted in 15 cases of obstruction of rescue operations. The Berlin police force was on duty with 660 officers, with additional support from the federal police. These were usually already a few minutes after becoming aware of a blockage. However, a lot of time was often required, especially for loosening the glued joints.

After the blockades of the previous day, officials launched 260 investigations, including into traffic enforcement and resistance. They also reported 151 administrative offenses for violating the freedom of assembly law.

The group celebrates the day as a success. “We certainly succeeded in getting our message across,” said spokeswoman Aimée van Baalen on Tuesday in the program “Frühstart” on RTL and ntv.

The group appeared in many posts, where they could talk about climate protection and “that politicians are simply not doing enough and knowingly breaking the constitution”. Van Baalen was convinced that this would have consequences for the population and viewers.

The climate activists failed to paralyze Berlin. “We are not talking about the city of Berlin,” she said. It is about the protest that draws attention to the resistance to the destruction of livelihoods. “I do believe we have managed to hold more of our previous protests over the past week and we will continue to do so,” the activist added.

The group continued their blockades in Berlin on Tuesday – there were more than 20 actions in the morning, according to police. The activists blocked major intersections, the city highway 100 and access roads to the highway, among other things. (jwg/AFP)
