A man drove his car into a pole at the Emma Bridge in Groningen. Police found the vehicle abandoned Sunday evening.
Doesn’t sound very spectacular. Nevertheless, the case made international headlines. And that’s because of the man’s ID.
But from the start: the police were able to arrest the 35-year-old man from the region a short time later at the Emma Bridge in the center of Groningen. “The man could not identify himself and refused the alcohol test,” says Thijs Damstra, police spokesperson, according to The Guardian. The driver has been arrested.
Upon inspection of the vehicle, police found a fake Ukrainian driver’s license issued under the name “Boris Johnson” with a photo of the former British prime minister with the trademark curly hair. The date of birth of the politician was also correct, June 19, 1964. The card was issued in July 2019 and is “valid” until December of the year 3000.
It is unclear how exactly the man obtained the fake driver’s license, according to the police. The document has been seized. The 35-year-old must now answer for forgery.
Spokesman Damstra adds: “As far as I know, the real Boris Johnson was not in the Netherlands at that time.” (ml)
